Radhika bought a car for Rs 2,50,000. Next year its price decreased by 10% and further next year it decreased by 12%. In the two years, overall decrease percent in the price of the car is
(a) 3.2%
(b) 22%
(c) 20.8%
(d) 8%
Solution:
The price at which Radhika bought the car = Rs. 2,50,000
The following year the price of the car decreased by 10%. Therefore the new price of the car became:
The new price of the car = 90% of Rs. 250,000
= (90/100) × 250,000
= 90 × 2500
= Rs. 225,000
The price further decreased by 12% in the next year. Therefore the new price was:
The new price of the car = 88% of Rs. 225,000
= (88/100) × 225,000
= 88 × 2250
= Rs. 198,000
The total decrease in the price of the car over two years is:
Decrease in Price over two years = Rs. 250,000 - Rs. 198,000
= Rs. 52,000
The % decrease in price over two years is = (52000/250000) × 100
= (52/250) × 100
= (52 × 4)/10
= 208/10 = 20.8%
✦ Try this: Radhika bought a car for Rs 5,00,000. Next year its price decreased by 15% and further next year it decreased by 18%. In the two years overall decrease percent in the price of the car is:
The price at which Radhika bought the car = Rs. 5,00,000
The following year the price of the car decreased by 15%. Therefore the new price of the car became:
The new price of the car = 85% of Rs. 500,000
= (85/100) × 500,000
= 85 × 5000
= Rs. 425,000
The price further decreased by 18% in the next year. Therefore the new price was:
New price of the car = 82% of Rs. 425,000
= (82/100) × 425,000
= 82 × 4250
= Rs. 348,500
The total decrease in price of the car over two years is:
Decrease in Price over two years = Rs. 500,000 - Rs. 348,500
= Rs. 151,500
The % decrease in price over two years is = (151,500/500,000) × 100
= 1515/50
= 30.3%
