Median of the data may or may not be from the given data. State whether the statement is true or false.
Solution:
Given, Median of the data may or may not be from the given data.
We have to determine if the given statement is true or false.
When the given data is arranged in ascending (or descending) order, then the middle most observation is the median of the data.
f n is odd, then median = (n+1)/2 th term
Example: consider the data 11, 4, 18, 7, 20
Arranging the data in ascending order, we get
4, 7, 11, 18, 20
n = 5
Median = (5+1)/2 th term
= 6/2 th term
= 3 rd term
Median = 11
If n is even, then median = [(n/2)th term + (n/2 + 1)th term]/2
Example: consider the data 11, 4, 18, 7, 20, 15
Arranging the data in ascending order, we get
4, 7, 11, 15, 18, 20
n = 6
Median = [(6/2)th term + (6/2 + 1)th term]/2
= [3rd term + (3+1)th term]/2
= [3rd term + 4th term]/2
= (11+15)/2
= 26/2
Median = 13
Therefore, median may or may not be from the given data.
