Jaidev takes \(2{\dfrac{1}{5}}\) minutes to walk across the school ground. Rahul takes 7/4 minutes to do the same. Who takes less time and by what fraction?
Solution:
We will use the concepts of fractions to solve this.
Time taken by Jaidev to walk across the school ground = \(2{\dfrac{1}{5}}\)min
Since the given fraction is in the mixed form we need to change to an improper fraction.
= (\(2{\dfrac{1}{5}}\)) = (2×5+1)/5
= 11/5 mins
Time taken by Rahul to walk across the school ground is 7/4min
Let us compare both the fractions, by converting them into an equivalent fraction.
LCM of 5 and 4 is 20
⇒ 11 / 5 = 11 × 4 / 5 × 4 = 44 / 20
⇒ 7 / 4 = 7 × 5 / 4 × 5 = 35 / 20
Since the denominator is the same for both, comparing numerators
44 > 35
Fraction with larger value of numerator will be greater
⇒ 11 / 5 > 7 / 4
So Rahul takes less time than Jaidev.
The difference between both the fractions will give the required value = 11 / 5 - 7 / 4
= 44 / 20 - 35 / 20 = 9 / 20min
Hence, Rahul takes 9/20 mins less than Jaidev to walk across the school ground.
