In Fig. 8.13, find tan P – cot R.
Solution:
We use the basic formula for tan and cot to solve the question.
Now, here, we have hypotenuse PR = 13 cm, and side PQ = 12 cm.
Now, from the pythagoras theorem, we have
PQ2 + QR2 = PR2
So, we have,
QR = √(PR2 - QR2)
= √(132 - 122)
= √25 = 5 cm
We know that, cot R = adjacent side of ∠R / opposite side of ∠R
tan P = opposite side of ∠P / adjacent side of ∠P
Hence, we have cot R = QR/PQ = 5/12
Also, tan P = QR/PQ = 5/12
So, tan P - cot R = 5/12 - 5/12 = 0
