(i) For any integer a, what is (-1) × a equal to ?
(ii) Determine the integer whose product with (-1) is
(a) -22 (b) 37 (c) 0
Solution:
i) For any integer a, (-1) × a is equal to - a as shown below.
( -1 ) × a = - a (where a is any integer)
ii) (a) ? × (-1) = -22
Let a be the required integer
a × (-1) = -22 -------- (1)
-a = -22
a = 22
Putting the value of a in equation (1), we get
a × (-1) = -22
22 × (-1) = -22
Thus, the required integer is 22.
(b) ? × (-1) = 37
Let a be the required integer
a × (-1) = 37 ----------- (2)
- a = 37
a = -37
Putting the value of a in equation (2), we get
a × (-1) = 37
-37 × (-1) = 37
Thus, the required integer is -37.
(c) ? × (-1) = 0
Let a be the required integer
a × (-1) = 0 ------------ (3)
- a = 0
a = 0
Putting the value of a in equation (3), we get
a × (-1) = 0
0 × (-1) = 0
0 × (-1) = 0 (Multipying any number with 0, gives the result as 0)
Thus, the required integer is 0.
