Give four rational numbers equivalent to:
(i) -2/7 (ii) 5/-3 (iii) 4/9
Solution:
To find out the equivalent fraction of any rational number, multiply the numerator and the denominator of the given number by the same numbers.
(i) -2/7
Multilying both numerator and denominator with the same number,
We get (-2 × 2)/(7 × 2) = -4/14 ,
(-2 × 3)/(7 × 3) = -6/21,
(-2 × 4)/(7 × 4) = -8/28,
(-2 × 5)/(7 × 5) = -10/35
Therefore, the equivalent fractions to the number -2/7 are, -4/14, -6/21, -8/28, -10/35
(ii) 5/(-3)
Multiplying both numerator and denominator with the same number, we get
(5 × 2)/(-3 × 2) = 10/(-6),
(5 × 3)/(-3 × 3) = 15/(-9),
(5 × 4)/(-3 × 4) = 20/(-12) ,
(5 × 5)/(-3 × 5) = 25/(-15)
Therefore, the equivalent fractions to the number 5/(-3) are 10/(-6) , 15/(-9) , 20/(-12) , 25/(-15)
(iii) 4/9
Multiplying both numerator and denominator with the same number, we get
(4 × 2)/(9 × 2) = 8/18,
(4 × 3)/(9 × 3) = 12/27,
(4 × 4)/(9 × 4) = 16/36,
(4 × 5)/(9 × 5) = 20/45
Therefore, the equivalent fractions to the number 4/9 are 8/18, 12/27, 16/36 and 20/45.
