Find the value of the letters
B A A
+ B A A
3 A 8
Solution:
If A + A = 8
Then A = 4 or 9
If A = 4 then in the units place
A + A = 8 ( there is no carry over)
In the Tens place
A + A = 4 + 4 ≠ number ending with 4
Hence we select
A = 9
Therefore A + A = 9 + 9 = 18 (which ends with 8 and one carries over)
In the tens place,
A + A + 1 = 9 + 9 + 1 = 19 (which ends in 9 and 9 = A; Also one carries over)
B + B + 1 = 3 only if
B = 1
Hence, A = 9, B = 1
✦ Try This: Find the value of the letters
B 9 A
+ B A A
5 A 6
If A = A + A = number ending with 6 means
A = 3 or 8
If A = 3 then A + A = 6 with no carry over
And if A = 3 then 9 + A ≠ number ending with 3
9 + 3 ≠ number ending in 3
Therefore if A = 8
A + A = 8 + 8 = 16 (one carries over)
9 + 8 + 1 = 18 ( which ends in A i.e. 8 and one carries over)
B + B + 1 = 5
Therefore B = 2
Hence we have:
A = 8, B = 2
2 9 8
+ 2 8 8
5 8 6
