Find the rule which gives the number of matchsticks required to make the following matchsticks patterns. Use a variable to write the rule.
Solution:
We use the concept of algebra to find the rule which gives the number of matchsticks required to make the given matchsticks patterns.
Matchsticks pattern can be formed by multiplying the number of sticks it requires to form the alphabet.
Let the number of letters be represented as 'n'.
a) T is formed using only two sticks.
∴ The pattern of the letter T is 2n, where n = number of T
b) Z is formed using three sticks.
∴ The pattern of the letter Z is 3n, where n = number of Z
c) U is formed using three sticks.
∴ The pattern of the letter U is 3n, where n = number of U
d) V is formed using only two sticks.
∴ The pattern of the letter V is 2n, where n = number of V
e) E is formed using five sticks.
∴ The pattern of the letter E is 5n, where n = number of E
f) S is formed using five sticks.
∴ The pattern of the letter S is 5n, where n = number of S
g) A is formed using six sticks.
∴ The pattern of the letter A is 6n, where n = number of A
