Find: (a) 1/2 of (i) \(2{\Large\frac{3}{4}}\) (ii) \(4{\Large\frac{2}{9}}\)
(b) 5/8 of (i) \(3{\Large\frac{5}{6}}\) (ii) \(9{\Large\frac{2}{3}}\)
Solution:
A fraction is equal parts of a whole thing where numerator represents the number of equal parts and denominator represents equal parts of the whole thing.
We will multiply numerator with numerator and denominator with denominator.
Here first we will change the mixed fraction into an improper fraction.
(a) (i) 1/2 of \(2{\Large\frac{3}{4}}\) = 1/2 × 11/4
= 11/8 (improper fraction)
Converting 11/8 into mixed fraction, we get:
11/8 = \(1{\Large\frac{3}{8}}\)
(ii) 1/2 of \(4{\Large\frac{2}{9}}\) = 1/2 × 38/9
= 19/9 (improper fraction)
Converting 19/9 into mixed fraction we get:
19/9 = \(2{\Large\frac{1}{9}}\)
(b) (i) 5/8 of \(3{\Large\frac{5}{6}}\) = 5/8 × 23/6
= 115/48 (improper fraction)
Converting 115/48 into mixed fraction, we get:
115/48 = \(2{\Large\frac{19}{48}}\)
(ii) 5/8 of \(9{\Large\frac{2}{3}}\) = 5/8 × 29/3
= 145/24 (improper fraction)
Converting 145/24 into mixed fraction, we get:
145/24 = \(6{\Large\frac{1}{24}}\)
