Compare the following numbers
(i) 2.7 × 10¹²; 1.5 × 10⁸    (ii) 4 × 10¹⁴; 3 × 10¹⁷

Solution:

In this question, simplify the numbers and decide which one is greater.

Another way is to look at the power of 10.

The number with higher power of 10 is greater than the other.

(i) In numbers, 2.7 × 10¹² and 1.5 × 10⁸

2.7 × 10¹² = 2.7 × 1000000000000 = 2700000000000

And,
1.5 × 10⁸ = 1.5 × 8 = 1.5 × 100000000 = 150000000

So, 2.7 × 10¹² is greater than 1.5 × 10⁸

(ii) In numbers, 4 × 10¹⁴; 3 × 10¹⁷

4 × 10¹⁴ = 4 × 100000000000000 = 400000000000000

And,
3 × 10¹⁷ = 3 × 100000000000000000 = 300000000000000000

So, 3 × 10¹⁷ is greater than 4 × 10¹⁴
