Asha and Samuel have bookshelves of the same size partly filled with books. Asha’s shelf is 5/6th full and Samuel’s shelf is 2/5th full. Whose bookshelf is more full? By what fraction?
Solution:
We will use the concepts of fractions to solve this.
The portion of Asha’s bookshelf filled is 5 / 6
The portion of Samuel’s bookshelf filled = 2 / 5
Let us compare both the fractions,
LCM of 5 and 6 is 30
Now we have to make both the fractions into equivalent fractions to compare.
5 × 5 / 6 × 5 = 25 / 30
2 × 6 /5 × 6 = 12 / 30
So we have 5 / 6 = 25 / 30 and 2 /5 = 12 / 30
As we can see denominator is same and comparing numerators,
25 > 12
So, 5 / 6 is greater than 2 / 5
As we can see Asha’s shelf is more filled than Samuel’s shelf.
Difference between both the filled portions is 25 / 30 - 12 / 30 = 13 / 30
Hence, Asha’s shelf is 13 / 30th more filled than Samuel’s shelf.
