All six faces of a cuboid are __________ in shape and of ______ area.
Solution:
A cuboid is as shown below:
The cuboid is defined by three dimensions: Length(L), Breadth(B) and Height(H).
As evident from the above diagram all the faces of the cuboid are rectangular and the area of faces are different. There are 6 rectangular faces for a cuboid and each has a different area.
The areas of the faces of the cuboid are : L × B, B × H and L × H.
✦ Try This: The surface area of a cuboid is ____________.
The diagram below shows the six surfaces of the cuboid. The surface area of the cuboid is the sum of all the six faces of the cuboid.
The surface area of the cuboid is = Area of faces 1 & 2 + Area of faces 3 & 4 + Area of faces 5 & 6
Surface area of a cuboid = B × H + B × H + L × B + L × B + L × H + L × H
= 2( B × H) + 2( L × B) + 2( L × H)
= 2[BH + LB + LH]
The surface area of a cuboid is 2[BH + LB + LH]
