About 230 billion litres of water flows through a river each day. How many litres of water flows through that river in a week? How many litres of water flows through the river in an year? Write your answer in standard notation.
Solution:
Given, 230 billion litres of water flows through a river each day.
We know, 1 billion = 1000000000 = 10⁹
Water flows through a river in each day= 230 billion
= 230 × 100 × 10⁹
= 2.3 × 10² × 10⁹
Using law of exponents,
am × an = am + n
= 2.3 × 102 + 9
= 2.3 × 10¹¹ litres
We know, 1 week = 7 days
Water flow through the river in a week = 7 × 2.3 × 10¹¹
= 16.1 × 10¹¹
= 1.61 × 10¹ × 10¹¹
= 1.61 × 101 + 11
= 1.61 × 10¹² litres.
We know, 1 years = 365 days
Water flow through the river in one year = 365 × 2.3 × 10¹¹
= 839.5 × 10¹¹
= 8.395 × 10² × 10¹¹
= 8.395 × 102 + 11
= 8.395 × 10¹³ litres
Therefore, the water flow through the river in one week and one year is 1.61 × 10¹² litres and 8.395 × 10¹³ litres.
