A total of 25 patients admitted to a hospital are tested for levels of blood sugar, (mg/dl) and the results obtained were as follows :
87 71 83 67 85
77 69 76 65 85
85 54 70 68 80
73 78 68 85 73
81 78 81 77 75
Find mean, median and mode (mg/dl) of the above data.
Solution:
Given, a total of 25 patients admitted to a hospital are tested for levels of blood sugar.
We have to find the mean, median and mode of the given data.
Arranging all the observations in ascending order.
54 69 75 78 85
65 70 76 80 85
67 71 77 81 85
68 73 77 81 85
68 73 78 83 87
Mean = sum of all observations / total number of observations
Sum of all observations = 54 + 65 + 67 + 68 + 68 + 69 + 70 + 71 + 73 + 73 + 75 + 76 + 77 + 77 + 78 + 78 + 80 + 81 + 81 + 83 + 85 + 85 + 85 + 85 + 87
= 1891
Total number of observations = 25
Mean = 1891/25 = 75.64
Given, n = 25 which is odd
Median = [(n + 1)/2]th observation
= (25 + 1)/2
= 26/2
= 13 th observation
So, median = 77
Mode is defined as the highest frequency of an observation.
Maximum repeated number of the observation = 85
Mode = 85
Therefore, the mean, median and mode of the observations are 75.64, 77 and 85.
