A store is having a 25% discount sale. Sheela has a Rs 50 gift voucher and wants to use it to buy a board game marked for Rs 320. She is not sure how to calculate the concession she will get. The sales clerk has suggested two ways to calculate the amount payable
- Method 1: Subtract Rs 50 from the price and take 25% off the resulting price
- Method 2: Take 25% off the original price and then subtract Rs 50
a. Do you think both the methods will give the same result? If not, predict which method will be beneficial for her
b. For each method, calculate the amount Sheela would have to pay. Show your work
c. Which method do you think stores actually use? Why
Solution:
Method 1
Marked Price(MP) = Rs. 320
Taking From Rs. 50 from the marked Price we get the new price = Rs. 320 - Rs. 50 = Rs. 270
Discount = Discount % × New Price = 25% × 270 = Rs. 67.50
Amount Payable by Sheela = Rs. 270 - Rs. 67.50 = Rs. 202.50
Method 2
Marked Price(MP) = Rs. 320
Discount = Discount % × MP = 25% × 320 = Rs. 80
Discounted Price = Rs. 320 - Rs. 80 = Rs. 240
Then Using the Gift Voucher of Rs. 50 we get the amount Payable by sheela as = Rs. 240 - Rs. 50 = Rs. 190
The stores will use Method 1
✦ Try This: A store is having a 20% discount sale. Sheela has a Rs 50 gift voucher and wants to use it to buy a board game marked for Rs 480. She is not sure how to calculate the concession she will get. The sales clerk has suggested two ways to calculate the amount payable.
- Method 1: Subtract Rs 120 from the price and take 20% off the resulting price.
- Method 2: Take 20% off the original price and then subtract Rs 100.
1. Do you think both the methods will give the same result? If not, predict which method will be beneficial for her.
2. For each method, calculate the amount Sheela would have to pay. Show your work.
3. Which method do you think stores actually use? Why?
Method 1
Marked Price(MP) = Rs. 480
Taking From Rs. 120 from the marked Price we get the new price = Rs. 480 - Rs.120 = Rs. 360
Discount = Discount % × New Price = 20% × 360 = Rs. 72.00
Amount Payable by Sheela = Rs. 360 - Rs. 72 = Rs. 288.00
Method 2
Marked Price(MP) = Rs. 480
Discount = Discount % × MP = 20% × 480 = Rs. 96
Discounted Price = Rs. 480 - Rs.96 = Rs. 384
Then Using the Gift Voucher of Rs. 50 we get the amount Payable by sheela as = Rs. 384 - Rs. 120 = Rs. 264.00
The stores will use Method 1
