A circus artist is climbing a 20 m long rope, which is tightly stretched and tied from the top of a vertical pole to the ground. Find the height of the pole, if the angle made by the rope with the ground level is 30° (see Fig. 9.11)
Solution:
Given:
- Length of rope = 20 m
- The angle of rope with ground = 30°= ∠ACB
We have to find the height of the pole.
AB = Height of the Pole
BC = distance between the point on the ground and the pole.
AC = Length of the Rope (Hypotenuse)
In ΔABC,
sinC = AB/AC
sin30o = AB/20
1/2 = AB/20 [Since sin30o = 1/2]
AB = (1/2) × 20
AB = 10 m
Height of pole AB = 10 m
