A 10 m long and 4 m wide rectangular lawn is in front of a house. Along its three sides a 50 cm wide flower bed is there as shown in Fig. 9.58. Find the area of the remaining portion.
Solution:
Given, a rectangular lawn of dimensions 10 m long and 4 m wide is in front of a house.
The three sides of the lawn is covered by a flower bed 50 cm wide.
We have to find the remaining portion of the lawn.
Area of rectangle = length × breadth
Considering entire lawn,
Length = 10 m
Breadth = 4 m
Area of rectangular lawn = 10(4)
= 40 m²
Considering flower bed on all three sides,
Flower bed 1,
Length = 4 m - 50 cm
We know, 1 m = 100 cm
So, length = 400 - 50 = 350 cm
Length in m = 350/100 = 3.5 m
Breadth = 50 cm
Breadth in m = 50/100 = 0.5 m
Area of flower bed 1 = 3.5 × 0.5
= 1.75 m²
Flower bed 2,
Length = 10 m
Breadth = 50 cm
Breadth in m = 50/100 = 0.5 m
Area of flower bed 2 = 10 × 0.5
= 5 m²
Flower bed 3,
Length = 4 m - 50 cm
We know, 1 m = 100 cm
So, length = 400 - 50 = 350 cm
Length in m = 350/100 = 3.5 m
Breadth = 50 cm
Breadth in m = 50/100 = 0.5 m
Area of flower bed 3 = 3.5 × 0.5
= 1.75 m²
Total area of flower bed = area of flower bed 1 + area of flower bed 2 + area of flower bed 3
= 1.75 + 5 + 1.75
= 8.5 m²
Area of the remaining portion of the lawn = area of entire lawn - area of flower bed
= 40 - 8.5
= 31.5 m²
Therefore, area of remaining portion is 31.5 m²
