IMO Cut Off
The Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) conducts the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) annually for students in grades 1 to 12. For the year 2021, the IMO is scheduled in the month of December and January on three different dates. Schools can select one date as per their convenience to conduct the IMO exam. After the exams for all sets will be completed, the SOF will declare the IMO Result along with IMO cut off marks.
IMO cut off marks 2020-21 for all grades will be made available online on the SOF official website. Once the class wise IMO cut off marks are available students can check them by visiting the link (https://sofworld.org). This enables students to evaluate their performance and prepare better for level 2.
Students who will successfully qualify for the level 1 IMO cut off will be eligible for the level 2 IMO exam. Top five percent of candidates who appear in the level 1 IMO exam are selected for the level 2 exam. In cases where more than one candidate have the same marks in level 1, section-wise marks of each are considered to determine the qualifiers for the next stage. Here are the details of factors determining the IMO cut off.
IMO Cut Off Determining Factors
IMO Cut off marks are determined using some important factors that include the complexity level of the exam, number of students appearing, scholarships to be awarded, etc. Here is the list of factors that determine the IMO cut off marks:
- The number of students who appeared in the IMO exam.
- The complexity level of the IMO exam paper.
- The numbers of scholarships to be distributed.
- Section-wise marks that are scored by the students.
IMO Cut Off Section-wise Weightage
The IMO question paper has four sections-- Logical Reasoning, Mathematical Reasoning, Everyday Mathematics and Achievers Section. Each section contains a set of questions with some weightage of marks. The four codes applied to evaluate the marks in each section are M1, M2, M3 and M4.
While determining the IMO cut off, each section is prioritized based on the weightage of marks it holds. Let’s see the section-wise weightage of the IMO exam paper to understand which section has the maximum weightage and which one has the minimum.

IMO Cut Off Marks For Level 1
IMO cut off marks for level 1 are the minimum marks required to sit in the next stage of the IMO exam. If one or more students obtain the same marks in the IMO exam, the rank is determined based on the marks secured section-wise, considering M4, M2, M3 and M1 in decreasing order. These codes represent the section of the IMO exam paper.
- M1 is the code used for Logical Reasoning
- M2 is the code used for Mathematical Reasoning
- M3 is the code used for Everyday Mathematics
- M4 is the code used for Achievers Section

FAQs on IMO Cut Off
What is the IMO cut off?
IMO cut off is the minimum marks criteria required for the next level of the IMO exam. SOF declares the cut off marks for grades 3 to 12 on its official website. Students can check the cut off criteria for each grade by visiting the link-- https://sofworld.org.
How is the IMO cut off criteria for Level 1 exam decided?
The IMO cut off criteria for Level 1 exam is decided by SOF based on various factors like complexity of exam, number of participants, awards, scholarships, etc. IMO cut off determines the minimum marks required to qualify the Level 1 exam. For instance, the cut off to pass the Level 1 IMO in the year 2019-20 was 38 for Class 12.
What is the IMO cut off for grades 1st and 2nd?
