Subtracting Mixed Numbers Calculator
'Subtracting Mixed Numbers Calculator' is an online tool that helps to calculate the difference between two mixed numbers. A mixed number is a combination of a whole number and a proper fraction.
What is Subtracting Mixed Numbers Calculator?
Subtracting Mixed Numbers Calculator helps you to subtract two mixed numbers within a few seconds. To convert a mixed number to an improper fraction, the whole number is multiplied by the denominator and the result is added to the numerator of the proper fraction by retaining the denominator

How to Use the Subtracting Mixed Numbers Calculator?
Please follow the below steps to subtract two mixed numbers:
- Step1: Enter the two mixed numbers or mixed fractions in the given input boxes.
- Step 2: Click on the "Subtract" button to find the difference between the two mixed numbers.
- Step 3: Click on the "Reset" button to clear the fields and find the difference for different mixed numbers.
How to Subtract Mixed Numbers?
- Step 1: Convert the mixed numbers/fractions into improper fractions.
- Step 2: Check the values of denominators after converting them into improper fractions.
- Step 3: If the denominator values are the same, subtract the numerators and express the fraction in its simplest form.
- Step 4: If the denominator values are different, find the LCM of the denominators to make them equal and then subtract the numerators.
Solved Examples on Subtracting Mixed Numbers Calculator
-
Example 1:
Subtract \(7 \frac{1}{2}\) and \(5\frac{3}{2}\)
Solution:
We first convert the mixed numbers/fractions into improper fractions.
\(7 \frac{1}{2}\)= ((7 × 2) + 1) / 2 = 15 / 2
\(5 \frac{3}{2}\) = ((5 × 2) + 3) / 2 = 13 / 2
= (15 / 2) - (13 / 2)
= 15 - 13 / 2
= 2 / 2
= 1
-
Example 2:
Subtract \(5 \frac{2}{3}\) and \(2 \frac{5}{4} \)
Solution:
We first convert the mixed numbers/fractions into improper fractions.
\(5 \frac{2}{3}\)= ((5 × 3) + 2) / 3 = 17 / 3
\(2 \frac{5}{4} \) = ((2 × 4) + 5) / 4 = 13 / 4
Now, (17 / 3) - (13 / 4) ( As the denominator values are different, take LCM of denominators, that is, LCM of (3,4) which is 12.
= (17 × 4) / 12 - (13 × 3) / 12
= 68 / 12 - 39 / 12
= (68 - 39) / 12
= 29 /12
Similarly, you can try the calculator and find the difference for the following mixed numbers.
1) \(2 \frac{5}{4}\) and \(3 \frac{8}{4}\) 2) \(3 \frac{8}{7}\) and \(4 \frac{3}{5}\)
